{"id":1025,"date":"2011-09-25T17:25:36","date_gmt":"2011-09-25T17:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.renando.com\/blog\/?p=1025"},"modified":"2021-01-15T21:57:36","modified_gmt":"2021-01-15T21:57:36","slug":"dreamworld-buzzsaw-innovation-integration-and-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/dreamworld-buzzsaw-innovation-integration-and-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspiration from Dreamworld&#8217;s BuzzSaw: Riding innovation with integration and action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I attended an evening launch of <a title=\"Dreamworld's BuzzSaw ride\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamworld.com.au\/Rides\/Thrill-Rides\/BuzzSaw\/BuzzSaw.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dreamworld\u2019s new BuzzSaw ride<\/a> last week. Spinning around at 105 kmh, I calmly considered the innovation necessary to get me in the seat.\u00a0 As I stumbled away on shaking legs, I asked the question: &#8220;<em>Is innovation all about big exciting rides, or is there more?<\/em>&#8221; The look on my face during the event also reminds me that innovation is not for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1028\" title=\"Dreamworld's BuzzSaw\" alt=\"Dreamworld's BuzzSaw\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DreamworldBuzzsaw1.jpg\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>An evening buzzing with fear and fun<\/h2>\n<p>Dreamworld held the partner event to showcase their <a title=\"BuzzSaw on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BuzzSaw_%28roller_coaster%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Buzz Saw ride<\/a>, the tallest inversion in the Southern Hemisphere and the second highest inversion worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The event started with choreographed ghosts telling the story of Jack Darke who died in the saw mill in 1887.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1030\" title=\"Ghost Number Two\" alt=\"Ghost Number Two\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Ghost21.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the ghosts told their tale, zombies wandered amongst the living.\u00a0 A few were kind enough to stop for pictures.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1032 alignnone\" title=\"Chad and Zombie\" alt=\"Chad and Zombie\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/ChadAndZombie1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1033 alignnone\" title=\"Craig And Zombie\" alt=\"Craig And Zombie\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/CraigAndZombie1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1034 alignnone\" title=\"Al And Zombies\" alt=\"Al And Zombies\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/AlAndZombie1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After putting it off as long as we could, we entered the queue, walking past relics of days past before coming to the sign no one obeyed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1035\" title=\"BuzzSaw's Buzz Saw\" alt=\"BuzzSaw's Buzz Saw\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BuzzSawBuzzSaw1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1036\" title=\"Don't Go In Here\" alt=\"Don't Go In Here\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DontGoInHere1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ghosts, zombies, and effects of the event, the engineering effort to design the ride, and the management required to get the ride in place all spoke to a holistic approach towards innovation.\u00a0 As the smoke lifted to reveal the actors behind the scene, our conversations turned to what is necessary for such innovation to occur.<\/p>\n<h2>Innovation research: Revealing a need for integration and action<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>What predicts innovation?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Innovation does not just happen.\u00a0 A <a title=\"Predictors of individual-level innovation at work: A meta-analysis\" href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuy&amp;id=2011-04925-009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study reviewed 28 years of innovation research<\/a> to ask the question \u201c<em>What predicts innovation?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four hundred research projects confirmed that innovation is more likely if you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Individual <strong>personality traits<\/strong> of openness and creativity.<\/li>\n<li>People with higher <strong>education<\/strong> levels and longer <strong>tenure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>People who are <strong>motivated<\/strong> by the task itself as well as motivated by things outside the task such as rewards.<\/li>\n<li>People who believe they can do the job (job <strong>self-efficacy<\/strong>) and believe in their ability to be creative in general (creative self-efficacy).<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>organisational culture<\/strong> of innovation and creativity.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>positive work climate<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Sufficient financial, training, and technical <strong>supporting resources<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate <strong>leadership<\/strong>, transformational leadership specifically.<\/li>\n<li>Sufficient <strong>complexity<\/strong> of the job, role and\/or project, as complex jobs are less routine, more challenging and promote idea generation.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate levels of <strong>autonomy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>expectation<\/strong> of the person to be innovative, based on the self-fulfilling prophesy factor of the <a title=\"Pygmalion effect on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pygmalion_effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPygmalion Effect\u201d<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Apply all these in more than one area&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not only do you need to consider these factors, but you should apply these over a range of areas.\u00a0 <a title=\"How innovative are UK firms? Evidence from the Fourth UK Community Innovation Survey on synergies between technological and organizational innovations\" href=\"http:\/\/wrap.warwick.ac.uk\/3229\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another research project analysed data from 16,383 British companies<\/a>.\u00a0 They outlined seven innovation areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Product innovation<\/li>\n<li>Process innovation<\/li>\n<li>Technology innovation<\/li>\n<li>Strategy innovation<\/li>\n<li>Management innovation<\/li>\n<li>Organisation structure innovation<\/li>\n<li>Marketing innovation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The study found that the more a company invested in one innovation area (for example, a big investment in product innovation), the more likely they were to be active in multiple areas.<\/p>\n<p>This outcome is supported by <a title=\"indsets in marketing for product innovation: an explorative analysis of chief marketing executives' ideas and beliefs about how to increase their firms' innovation capability\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emeraldinsight.com\/bibliographic_databases.htm?id=1774183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another research project<\/a> that found marketing managers who focused on product innovation were also involved in other innovation areas and depended on knowledge outside of the traditional scope of marketing\u2019s periphery.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And make sure your ideas are supported by action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Innovation is not just ideas, it is also action.\u00a0 <a title=\"The effects of person\u2013innovation fit on individual responses to innovation\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1348\/096317904X22953\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research into person-innovation fit<\/a> shows that alignment of innovation values between staff and their organisation is critical.\u00a0 Studies confirm commitment must be supported with individuals who have the appropriate abilities.\u00a0 Organisations must have vision and commitment for innovation as well as the means to carry it out.<\/p>\n<h2>Innovation: \u201cIt\u2019s a ripper of a ride\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1037\" title=\"Innovation Facial Expressions\" alt=\"Innovation Facial Expressions\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/InnovationFacialExpressions1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sign stating \u201cDon\u2019t go in here\u201d and the faces of those on the ride act as appropriate metaphors for those looking to inject innovation into their businesses. I have blurred out others in the picture, as some may not appreciate having the world see our carefully controlled social masks discarded at an acceleration of +5G.\u00a0 My own visage was not dissimilar to others, a mixture of fear and excitement through an expression that could be either joy or pain.<\/p>\n<p>Such is the way with the risks and rewards of innovation.\u00a0 The <a title=\"How innovative are UK firms? Evidence from the Fourth UK Community Innovation Survey on synergies between technological and organizational innovations\" href=\"http:\/\/wrap.warwick.ac.uk\/3229\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously mentioned study of British companies<\/a> noted that only 19 percent of the 16,383 companies were heavy adopters of innovation. If innovation was easy, it would not be <a title=\"Innovation on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defined as new<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I can confirm the three main areas of research findings against my own clients who engage in digital services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Innovation predictors<br \/>\n<\/strong>I have seen digital solutions fail without the right mix of innovation predictors.\u00a0 You need innovation predictors to ensure innovative activities maintain momentum and can continue beyond individual personalities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation areas<br \/>\n<\/strong> Digital solutions are rarely the only innovative investment.\u00a0 What we provide is frequently part of a holistic strategy involving parallel projects in other areas such as management, product, and strategy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Action<\/strong><br \/>\nDigital solutions are expressions of really good ideas.\u00a0 Similar to constructing a theme park ride, you need those with the appropriate experience to move beyond ideas and into implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Innovation is not easy.\u00a0 It requires many factors and synergy between many areas.\u00a0 Once all the pieces are in place, however, it\u2019s a thrilling experience worth the price of admission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I attended an evening launch of Dreamworld\u2019s new BuzzSaw ride last week.
