And what does this mean for advice we give to others?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5425\" alt=\"hypocrite_vs_teacher_quote\" src=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/hypocrite_vs_teacher_quote-710x444.jpg\" width=\"710\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/hypocrite_vs_teacher_quote-710x444.jpg 710w, https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/hypocrite_vs_teacher_quote.jpg 833w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>On heeding advice<\/h2>\n<p>The New Year can hold near-spiritual connotations for <a title=\"The anatomy of a New Year\u2019s resolution: Goal setting psychology by Gary Latham and Edwin Locke\" href=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/01\/the-anatomy-of-a-new-years-resolution-goal-setting-psychology-by-gary-latham-and-edwin-locke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolutions<\/a>. Our propensity for making broad declarations can be attributed to the start of something new combined with holiday time off for reflection.\u00a0 So long as we do not fill it with other noise, the commercial machine offers a gap between Christmas and New Years to consider what we want more of and less of in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProblems cannot be solved by the level of awareness that created them.\u201d, or so goes the quote <a title=\"Wikiquote: Albert Einstein\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Talk:Albert_Einstein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dubiously attributed to Einstein<\/a>.\u00a0 Our awareness changes through our experience as well as through input from books, films, and advice.\u00a0 As I plan my own version of 2012, I also consider the collective input I have amassed over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>I acknowledge I <a title=\"Taking a break to take stock: What research tells us about workaholics, burnout and work-life balance\" href=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/09\/research-tells-us-about-workaholics-burnout-and-work-life-balance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work a bit too hard<\/a>.\u00a0 My pace often prompts advice from older executives who have followed my path themselves but now \u201csee the light\u201d.\u00a0 I will admit to some frustration at what I have considered a hypocritical position.<\/p>\n<h2>Et tu, Bill Gates?<\/h2>\n<p>I know what it takes to build and grow.\u00a0 Metaphoric examples such as \u201cbreaking orbit\u201d or \u201cgiving birth\u201d involve extreme amounts of energy and frequently pain.\u00a0 I know what well-meaning leaders have sacrificed in the form of families, character, and health to build their empire.\u00a0 Who do they think they are to turn around and tell me there is a better way or that it is not my place to follow in their steps?<\/p>\n<p>And yet their recommendations ring true, even as I find myself wanting to offer the same advice to others.\u00a0 I also find, however, that I cannot always look others in the eye as I attempt to promote a better way.\u00a0 There is a principle in coaching that you can only give what you have, and I have yet to master many of the principles purported by management gurus.<\/p>\n<p>These thoughts were top of mind as I researched <a title=\"My frustration with Firms of Endearment: Shame, meaning, and action\" href=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/12\/my-frustration-with-firms-of-endearment-shame-meaning-and-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my previous blog post on Firms of Endearment<\/a>.\u00a0 In <a title=\"The Attack of Capitalist Fundamentalists on Bill Gates\" href=\"http:\/\/firmsofendearment.typepad.com\/srm\/2008\/01\/the-attack-of-c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2008 blog post<\/a>, \u00a0co-author David Wolfe plays out a situation similar to the one described above involving Microsoft\u2019s Bill Gates:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>On Thursday, the richest man in the world made an impassioned plea at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He urges businesses the world over to adopt what he called creative capitalism as a way to sharply curtail abject poverty on a worldwide basis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Gates was savaged on CNBC\u2019s Kudlow &amp; Company by an assortment of Wall Street cognoscenti. They accused Gates of forgetting his roots as one of the most accomplished capitalists in history and selling out to do-goodism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A friend who saw Larry Kudlow and his incensed companions damn Gates emailed me, \u201cIn essence, they ridiculed tough CEOS who played \u201chardball\u201d in building their companies and their assets, only to become evangelists for the importance of \u201cdoing good works\u201d as part of the business platform, AFTER they\u2019ve attained their market objectives. They see these CEOs as dangerous to the capitalistic values that made their companies great.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The evolution of a resolution<\/h2>\n<p>I wonder if Gates is challenged with how to offer advice that is perceived as contrary to the worldview that contributed to his success.\u00a0 At what point did he shift into a different way of thinking, or was he always trying to push an agenda that was frustrated by the commercial machine?\u00a0 If we were to track his resolutions year on year, would we see a growing emphasis on making a difference rather than making software?<\/p>\n<p>Goals are important, but there is a risk in our resolutions of adding yet another to-do list to the pile.\u00a0 I am following a path of<a title=\"David Collins\u2019 formula for a guru change model: \u201cn-steps\u201d to doubling a digital agency\" href=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/11\/david-collins-guru-change-model-n-steps-to-doubl-digital-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> being realistic about change<\/a>\u00a0and <a title=\"Change with meaning: Levinas on the il-y-a, The Other, hypostasis, and a new representation\" href=\"https:\/\/sidewaysthoughts.com\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/12\/change-with-meaning-levinas-on-the-il-y-a-the-other-hypostasis-and-a-new-representation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defining meaning in the changes we make<\/a>.\u00a0 This is based on a belief that to do different, we must be different.
